LETTER FROM HYPERTHERM

Previous | Back to Newsletter | Next

I have often heard Hypertherm's founder, Dick Couch, remark about the transformation he's observed in Hypertherm's products over his career. He most frequently cites the progress made since our first half-inch "portable" cutter, the MAX40 was introduced in 1985. For roughly the same price (and a lot less in inflation-adjusted dollars), today's Powermax45 cuts at least twice as fast, has at least triple the consumable life, is literally a small fraction of the size and weight, and is many times more reliable.

Another example is the MAX100, a "one-inch" machine that was relatively new when I started at Hypertherm 20 years ago. It was and remains a real workhorse, but was a large wheeled cabinet with relatively limited application options and features. Just a few weeks ago, Hypertherm introduced the new Powermax 105, following the lineage from the MAX100 and the Powermax1650. You can fit three or four in most car trunks, it has seven different application torches, it cuts like nothing else, and it's super smart.

Moore's Law (named after Gordon Moore, the co-founder of Intel) accurately predicted in 1965 that the density (power and speed) of integrated circuits would double every two years. The same isn't exactly true for plasma cutting systems, since they rely on more than just semiconductors and microprocessors. But the relentless application of available technologies by Hypertherm's product development teams in both our power supplies and in our torches and controllers is truly transformative with each product generation.

At a time when many in our industry have decided our current technology is good enough, focusing instead on price points, packaging and merchandizing, I'm proud of Hypertherm's continuing obsession with technology application and the state-of-the-art improvements that we constantly strive to bring to the true cutting professional.

Sincerely,

Evan Smith, General Manager
