LETTER FROM HYPERTHERM

In October, we celebrate National Ownership Month at Hypertherm. Why? Hypertherm is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company. All shares of the company are owned by associates (our preferred alternative to “employee”,) and all associates with enough qualifying time become owners.

You might ask why I mention this in a customer newsletter. It is because ownership really does matter in where a company places its focus and how it serves its customers. Where do you suppose a company trying to beat a quarterly forecast to Wall Street places its ultimate priority? At Hypertherm, every associate shares in annual profits and receives an annual allocation of company shares held for the long term. As both associates and owners of the company, we all have a direct stake not just in the daily success of the company, but also in the long-term performance and sustainability of the enterprise.

CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT

Sasker Manufacturing, in Onamia, Minnesota, makes parts for bucket elevator legs and conveyers which are used by the agricultural industry to transport and manage food supplies, such as grain, or ancillary items, like fertilizer. The elevator legs, made with a combination of mild and stainless steel, enclose the bucket system with walls that range from 12 to 7 gauges thick. Recently, the company replaced its 200 amp plasma system with a system with nearly half the power.

TECHNICAL TIP

More and more today we receive calls from customers who might have an issue with cut quality or are receiving a failure code but do not know how to fix it. In cases like this, many of the questions back to a customer from a service engineer are related to settings within their system and how those might play into the failure seen by the customer. As the customer, you may be familiar with the user interface screens and how to navigate between them. Often customers try different settings in the moment to do cause-and-effect investigation on their own, but then don’t remember where they were originally or how to get back to an earlier performance level, particularly if something happened and cut quality or machine performance degraded as a result.

SUCCESS STORIES

A company that has not only witnessed—but lived through—the evolution of the maple syrup industry is Leader Evaporator Company. This 125 year old company located in Northern Vermont is the largest manufacturer of equipment used to produce maple syrup in the United States. And although Leader Evaporator makes equipment for an industry hundreds of years old, the equipment it uses couldn’t be more modern.

Ask Jim

Q. What's the deal with these new CopperPlus electrodes? Do they help nozzle life or just the electrode? Are they recommended for just mechanized cutting or are they good for hand cutting too?

A. CopperPlus electrodes are a recently developed electrode manufacturing technology that dramatically improves electrode life. These electrodes are available for the Powermax65, Powermax85, Powermax105, and any earlier Hypertherm system with a Duramax torch.

They work for hand cutting and for machine cutting on materials up to ½” thick, at power levels between 40 and 105 amps. If you are cutting anything above ½” then you probably will not see any noticeable increase in electrode life.

IMPROVED PERFORMANCE FOR KOMATSU RASOR SYSTEMS FROM CENTRICUT

Hypertherm’s Centricut brand has a long history of engineering technologically advanced torch and consumable products for non-Hypertherm systems. Its latest achievement reaches to Komatsu Rasor plasma systems in the form of a nozzle that eliminate the problem of leaking coolant. Hypertherm engineers were able to improve the seal on the nozzles through the addition of an o-ring seal not found on Komatsu branded nozzles. This o-ring forms a tight seal that keeps the coolant in the torch where it belongs so it can effectively cool the nozzle and other consumables.
