Letter from Hypertherm

Hypertherm’s culture of continuous improvement means we’re always looking for ways to get better. This includes not only examining what we are doing today, but also what we should be doing in the future. One thing I think companies like Hypertherm will need to do for the future is increasingly focus on deep customer engagement as trusted advisors. We will need to go beyond the equipment or system performance itself and increasingly look at the total value stream and product lifecycle for the customer. We need to gain an understanding of what each customer is trying to accomplish in their applications and integrated operations and become a partner in problem solving beyond individual product performance. Customer Spotlight

A seemingly endless supply of milk flows from a holding tank into a large truck on its way to a milk processing plant. The milk is the product of dozens of cows, which stand for hours in a long barn waiting to be milked. Many cows stand directly on concrete, but not these. These cows stand on a specially designed rubber surface that helps cushion their legs. While rubber mats for cows might seem a little overindulgent, for dairy farmers its serious business. At any given time nearly a third of their herd is lame, a condition that makes it difficult and painful for the cows to walk. This in turn leads to high veterinary bills and impacts milk production, both of which cut into a farmer’s profits. Read more.

Technical Tip

Here’s a tip to help you troubleshoot cutting issues. The solution, ironically, is to do more cutting! Program a 4” square with a 2” hole in the middle. Cut out that part while keeping an eye on your torch and controller. Once the cutting job is done, grab that part off the table and take a look. Read more.

MAKING BETTER BEVELS WITH PLASMA
Cutting parts with beveled edges is one of the most challenging jobs any plasma operator has to face. It can take hours to dial in a new part, and once you think you have it right, consumable wear and other factors quickly send once perfect parts out of tolerance. Learn how to take the pain out of beveling in this one hour webinar with Hypertherm’s Dan McLenithan. Watch now.

PLASMA, LASER, OXYFUEL, WATERJET
When it comes to industrial cutting, one size does not fit all. There are many options to choose from, each with pros and cons. Join Hypertherm's Jim Colt as he explains the benefits of four popular cutting methods and how to decide which one is right for you. Watch now.

Success Stories

Seventy miles west of the Louisiana state line you’ll find the small town of White Oak, Texas, home to roughly 6,500 people and wide open land. There, a 30 acre compound houses a nearly 130,000 square foot facility where roughly 200 people work two shifts a day to fabricate enormous pressure vessels for the oil and gas industry. Metal is bent and welded. Holes and edges cut, pipes fitted together, finished and painted. The final destination could be anywhere in the United States, the world even. Read more.

Q. What is the best way to achieve a quality cut on aluminum using a CNC plasma. I have a Hypertherm Powermax85 and have tried using 100 percent argon instead of compressed air; however, I couldn’t get the parts to cut. I have read about using helium also. Is that a better option?

A. You do not mention what thickness you are cutting, so I cannot help you select the best power and cutting parameters, however, no matter what material or thickness you’re cutting, my advice is always the same: use the settings found in your owner’s manual. All of our manuals contain very detailed cut charts, including cut charts for aluminum. Follow those charts and you can't go wrong. Read more.

Hypertherm Innovations

It started with a simple request from a customer out in the desert. The customer was trying to cut a sharply angled metal part using a Powermax system, but because the part had a deep channel, it wasn’t going well. The customer couldn’t get his torch close enough. “If only the tip was this much longer,” he said holding up his fingers to demonstrate. Read more.
