LETTER FROM HYPERTHERM

Since the official opening of our newest 160,000 square foot facility in New Hampshire early this year, we've made an effort to step up customer events there. It's been equipped with state-of-the-art training and product demonstration capabilities, but is also impactful to customers as a model design and manufacturing center.

TECHNICAL TIP

A common question we get is how do I know when it is time to change out my consumables? Unfortunately, there's no easy answer as it really depends on a number of factors. The thickness of the metal being cut, the average length of the cut, whether you're cutting by hand or on machine, and more all impact consumable life.

SQUARING THE TORCH TO THE PLATE
An often over looked step when trouble shooting cut problems is the torches position to the plate. If the torch and plate aren't square to each other, cut edges will suffer. We show you how to properly mount your torch in this short video.

CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT

Nondestructive testing or NDT is a standard practice in virtually every industry. It ensures the safety of products, whether food or toys or the tires on our car, that we come in contact with every day.

There's no room for error when it comes to NDT as Star Inspection knows. The company, from its offices in Louisiana and West Virginia, offers a number of NDT services for the drilling and completion products used in the oil and gas industry. That work includes testing pipe and drills. One of the tests ensures the pipe used in the drilling process is structurally sound and safe for reuse. The movement of the pipe in the well bore subjects the pipe to friction which can wear out the metal walls causing vulnerabilities.

Ask Jim

Q. What are some possible tips for reducing torch collision errors? Would raising the gap or increasing arc voltage help?

A. I'm guessing a little bit on what plasma and CNC machine you have. Depending on the plasma and the make and model of machine, it may require a different answer!

The machines that give a specific torch collision error usually have a Hypertherm HyPerformance HPR plasma system, and the error most often occurs when cutting thin material at low power levels (less than 80 amps.)

SIMPLIFYING BEVELS
Creating a beveled edge when cutting metal is something nearly every company is called upon to do. Since beveled edges are a necessity for weld preparation and other final assembly methods, it is estimated that up to 40 percent of mild steel parts cut today need at least one beveled edge. The cutting of those parts is widespread with 90 percent of fabricators having to make at least some parts with a bevel.
