Customer Spotlight

Up in Quebec, a company that specializes in metal part production is experiencing remarkable changes in their operation. Metal Corbert, though quite successful, had an outdated conventional plasma table that was no longer keeping up with the company’s work load. In addition, cut quality from the older system wasn’t that great causing the company to outsource much of its cutting to keep up with orders. However, since upgrading to a Hypertherm Built for Business Integrated Cutting Solution, this fabrication shop in Shawinigan, is seeing a marked increase in plasma consumable life and spending much less time on secondary operations. Technical Tip

Though all Hypertherm Waterjet systems are designed with our Advanced Intensifier Technology, all waterjets require maintenance. One of the most common failures that we see is called “intensifier overstroke.” This condition occurs when the piston in your intensifier strokes faster than the output flow of the waterjet pump can support. When this occurs, a message will appear on the waterjet display similar to the one shown below. The stroke rate for any particular intensifier is determined by the size of the hydraulic pump, and therefore is essentially a fixed rate. Read more.

Q. Can you talk a little about duty cycle and how Hypertherm determines duty cycle for its machines? Also, which machine is capable of cutting 1 inch thick material with a cut length of more than 40 feet?

A. Duty cycle tells us how long a machine can operate within a 10 minute period. In theory, a system with a 100 percent duty cycle can run for 10 out of 10 minutes, while a system with a 50 percent duty cycle is designed to run for 5 out of 10 and so on. In reality though, duty cycle cannot simply be listed as a percentage of “on time” in a given period. Read more.

Hypertherm Innovations

Did you know Hypertherm now offers 18 different torch options for our Powermax systems? We have short torches, long torches, straight, angled, handheld, mechanized, robotic, and more. Our newest torches are Duramax Hyamp torches. This torch lineup includes “long” torches for extended reach cutting. You can choose either a 2 foot or 4 foot long torch with a 45 or 90 degree angle. So two different torch length in two different angles. We also have Duramax Hyamp Robotic torches with three different head angles—45, 90, and 180 degrees. Read more.

Plasma, laser, waterjet, oxyfuel. There are lot of ways to cut metal and other materials like stone, plastic, and rubber. The trick is choosing the best method for your particular job since each of the methods mentioned above has its strengths and weaknesses. Learn about these four different methods in our new Guide to Comparative Cutting. We cover how each process works, the ideal thickness and type of material, production speeds, and cost per part.
