Letter from Hypertherm

In a past SPARK, I’ve written about Hypertherm being an “ESOP” (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company. That’s a mechanism by which business founders / owners can share ownership with employees (or “Associates” as we call ourselves at Hypertherm) by selling shares to an ESOP trust. In this way, the founders can take steps to ensure the continued independence and founding focus of the business beyond their direct ownership. Read more.

Customer Spotlight

Some people are fixers. Jon Snyder is one such person. He’s been fixing things all his life, starting as a kid when he’d tag along after his father and older brother hoping to fix the family’s farm equipment. Today, Jon is the owner of Gus' Garage and Towing in Versailles, a long time Ohio institution named after his father in law. Read more.

Technical Tip

We regularly get calls from customers who may have begun cutting on an HPR system but now have upgraded or purchased an HPRXD and are struggling with torch leaks, cut quality issues, or consumable life. One potential root cause is incorrect torch assembly. We have found customers often do not realize consumables in the HPRXD torches need to be assembled in a slightly different way. Read more.

Success Stories

The last time Robinson Fans bought a new plasma cutting table Ronald Reagan was president. For more than 30 years, the system tackled all sorts of metal cutting jobs for the custom manufacturer of industrial fans and similar air moving equipment. Unfortunately, the passage of time had finally taken its toll. Robinson found it could no longer keep up with its workload and felt it was spending more time than needed on secondary operations like grinding. Read more.

WHEN CIRCULAR PARTS GO FLAT

Q. I recently cut out some hubs. They were supposed to be completely circular, but only half the part turned out that way. The other half of the hub was somewhat straight. Do you know what could cause this and how to fix it?

A. While parts that are not properly shaped are almost always blamed on the cutting process, often flat spots on circular parts or holes are related to the height or motion control. I suggest you start by mounting a pen with a felt tip and fine point in place of your torch. Go through a test run, then carefully inspect the part to see if the same anomaly (flat spot) occurs. If the drawing on the part looks right, then the machine would appear to be okay, and you might be looking at a mechanical issue such as backlash. Read more.
