13 STEPS TO WORRY FREE PERFORMANCE
While most shops are great at inspecting items like cranes, forklifts, and air compressors, an item that tends to slip through the cracks is the plasma cutting system. Maybe that’s because plasma systems tend to “just work.” But even if your system appears to be working just fine, failing to properly maintain it is quietly impacting performance and life. Success Stories

NEW-AGE HEAVY METAL
I remember standing in a dark, cold, cluttered shop two years ago looking at a car project with unlimited potential. It was one of those projects that gets a gear-head’s heart beating fast. There was just one problem: the fabricator. He was a young guy who wanted to do things the way they were done back in the 1950s and ’60s—the days of “real hot rodding,” he said. I smiled but inside I was cringing. Anyone who was doing sheet metal fabrication and restoration back then knew just how restricted the techniques were, due to the limitations of some of the equipment. Plus, automotive sheet metal back in the ’50s was completely different from sheet metal of the ’60s and later. Equipment needed to change with the material. Read more.

Ask Jim

Q. I recently bought a Lightning 5x5 table to go with my Powermax45. Unfortunately, the table manufacturer went bankrupt right after that, and I have no idea how to set it up! This means I’m sitting on a $6,000 investment and have no technical support. Can you help?

A. There have been a number of companies that have popped up over the last few years building CNC plasma machines that have gone out of business. I can usually pinpoint these as underfinanced companies with prices that likely cannot be profitable. Read more.

INTRODUCING THE POWERMAX30 AIR
Hypertherm’s new Powermax30 AIR, available from authorized distributors in early March, combines plasma with an internal air compressor for easy cutting on the go. Like the Powermax30 XP, this little powerhouse runs on either 120 or 240 volt lines. It comes with a recommended cut capacity of 5/16” (8 mm) and a severance capacity of 5/8” (16 mm), yet weighs just 30 pounds (13.5 kg), giving it the highest power to weight ratio of any system in its class.
